It was a great show, The Alarm and The Fixx played and they were wonderful and I swear Cy Curnin has a Dorian Gray type painting in his closet because he hasn't aged at all.

I got up front for the Furs and Richard Butler squeezed my hand during Heaven and it was Heaven! All in all a great show and the dj's were spinning some great 80's stuff in between. I had a flashback and have decided I am no longer 44 I am 24 and am going to stick with that story. lol

I highly recommend seeing them if you get a chance!

Richard Butler Solo Album Bio

"I've experienced quite a bit in the last few years, both good and bad, and that's reflected in these songs," Richard Butler says of his self-titled debut solo album on KOCH Records.

"I think everybody reaches a point in their life where they begin to ask themselves certain questions. When you're young you feel like you're bulletproof, and being old seems a very long way away. But once you get to around 40, you begin to realize that you're not going to live forever, and you begin to think a bit more seriously about things like God and love and death."

As darkly magnetic front man and main songwriter of British alt-rock pioneers the Psychedelic Furs, Richard Butler established a compelling and uncompromising persona and built a seminal catalogue (including such iconic hits as "Pretty In Pink," "Love My Way," "Heaven" and "The Ghost In You") that's been described as the missing link between the Sex Pistols and Nirvana. In the '90s, he earned further esteem as leader of the similarly forceful Love Spit Love. But his new solo endeavor finds the veteran artist defying expectations to begin a stimulating new creative phase.

The eleven lyrically stirring, melodically striking compositions that comprise Richard Butler reveal startling new aspects of Butler's talents as a writer and performer, and demonstrate how an artist can say as much with a whisper as with a scream. Songs like "Breathe," "California," "Satellites" and "Good Days Bad Days" survey complex emotional and philosophical issues with haunting melodic understatement, as well as an unselfconscious sense of introspection that contrasts Butler's brash Psychedelic Furs persona.

"Singing softly and having the vocals out front felt very daring to me," Butler notes. "It can be very easy to hide behind a rock band, but allowing yourself to be vulnerable is a challenge. I never sang like that with the Furs, because it never fit the songs, but it felt appropriate for this album."

Butler's new compositions are the product of an emotionally wrenching period that saw the death of his father and the breakup of his marriage.

"These songs are personal to me, but I tried to present them in such a way that they're asking broader questions." he explains. "Okay, my relationship's falling apart, well, then, what is love? Is there such a thing as love? Does it mean anything? Is it real? Why do people get married? Music and art and poetry don't really provide answers, but they can help to frame the questions."

Another contributing factor to Richard Butler's intimate atmosphere was the album's homespun, organic birth process. Butler worked closely with co-producer/co-writer/multiinstrumentalist Jon Carin, whose resume includes work with Pink Floyd, Pete Townshend and Bryan Ferry as well as sessions with the Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love.

"Jon was an enormous influence on the direction of this album," Butler says of Carin, whose evocative soundscapes vividly manifest the songs' emotional gravity. "He's great at creating sounds and creating an ambience and what he came up with did a lot to inspire me to write honestly about the stuff I was feeling at the time."

Butler and Carin recorded the album at Carin's home studio in upstate New York, near Butler's own home. "I would go round to Jon's with bits of music and he'd pick up an acoustic guitar and start strumming, and we'd get some sounds on the keyboards, and then I'd take it away and work on the lyrics. It was inspiring working that way; it felt like it was our Music from Big Pink, but with better machines".

"We were working on our own, and we didn't even have a label yet, so we didn't have any restraints," Butler reports. "There was no deadline and no time limit, so we could experiment as much as we wanted and make the record we wanted to make. We didn't have to second-guess any market or think about the audience or the marketplace or getting on the radio. It was just about making the record as honest as possible."

Butler remains committed to his ongoing work with the Psychedelic Furs, who continue to tour extensively. But he's equally eager to continue exploring the solo direction he's established on Richard Butler.

"I'd like to go out on tour doing something more personal and intimate, with just Jon and me, or just me and one or two other musicians," he states. "I've never done that, and it would great to have that challenge, instead of having a loud rock band to take the pressure off me."

It's that sense of creative restlessness that's kept Richard Butler vital through nearly three decades as a recording artist.

"When you start out, a lot of your motivation is just wanting to be cool," he says. "But at this point in my life, I don't give a damn about being cool. When you get some experience, you start questioning what cool really means. To me, being cool is about knowing who you are and having the confidence to be yourself, and that's what I'm trying to do on this record."

Press Release Source: KOCH Records

Monday October 17, 10:30 am ET

Psychedelic Furs Frontman to Release Self-Titled, New Solo Album in Early 2006

NEW YORK, NY--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 17, 2005 -- KOCH Records announces the newest addition to its successful and burgeoning roster, multi-talented artist and Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler.

With one of the most distinctive and recognizable voices in recent history, Richard Butler burst upon the scene in 1979 as lead singer and predominant songwriter of The Psychedelic Furs. Throughout their legendary 26-year history, The Furs earned a reputation as one of the most iconic forces to come out of the 80s post-punk, new wave era. The band charted big hits with "Love My Way," "Pretty In Pink," "Heaven," and "The Ghost In You," and released seven studio albums.

For his forthcoming KOCH Records solo release, titled simply "Richard Butler," Butler collaborated with Jon Carin, an accomplished musician who has worked with Pink Floyd, Pete Townshend and Bryan Ferry. The result is a collection of songs that's an incredible melding of Butler's incisive lyrics and signature voice awash in Carin's mysteriously captivating musical landscape.

About the forthcoming album, Butler says, "I've experienced quite a bit the last few years, both good and bad... it's changed me tremendously... these songs reflect all of it... and because of that, they're some of the most personal and important songs I've ever done."

Look for the self-titled album "Richard Butler" in early 2006!

I wish I was in the area!

If you're able to make it up Beacon, New York (on the Hudson River, about 60 miles north of NYC) before April 18th, be sure to pay a visit to the Van Brunt Gallery on Main Street--Richard Butler has a large number of fantastic paintings and drawings on exhibit.

Summer 2004

10 Questions & 10 Answers
In the Summer of 2004, Psychedelic Furs manager Rob Dillman took the time to answer the Top Ten questions that were on all of our minds regarding the future career plans of the Furs and Richard Butler.

Has any material already been recorded for the new Furs album?
Nothing has been recorded yet (with the exception of some very rough scratch demos).

The band is currently beginning to sort through a bunch of ideas, and should be ready (and off the road long enough) to go into the studio by year's end. We're all VERY excited!!

What will the recording line-up be, and who will produce?
Final decisions are not made yet, but I can tell you that a number of accomplished producers have made their interest in participating clearly known. The lineup will certainly include the Furs in their current form....with some guest artists likely.

When do you realistically expect a new album to be released?
Realistically.....fall 2005......and worldwide tour.

Are there any plans to reissue/remaster the remaining LPs (from Mirror Moves on), or to reissue the video collection on DVD?
Probably, as the Furs tour more extensively and new releases appear....I'm sure you will see a smattering of various reissues and re-releases...including videos.

We do expect Sony to get to the reissues/remasters of the remainder of the catalog soon.

Which of the new songs (among those which have been played live over the past 4 years) can we expect to hear on the new album? Will any be relegated to a solo Richard Butler release?
"Broken Aeroplanes" and "California" are both solo songs from Richard, and will appear on his record.

As for the unreleased Furs tunes .....maybe......it all depends on whatever the final concept for the new album is. Some of those songs are in contention, although, the forthcoming album is not being written around existing songs.

What is the status of Richard's solo album?
It has been completed.....it's being mixed now. Produced by Jon Carin. It will be released this winter. More details soon.

Does Richard plan to tour (outside of the Furs) in support of his solo album?
Yes. I expect a pretty intense promotional and touring schedule for Richard in support of the album. He's gonna be a busy busy guy!!

Are there any plans to vary the live setlists to include a broader range of material?
Sure. Although it may not seem so to many of us who do the mulitple show thing....the setlist has varied quite a bit since this time last year with titles like Alice's House, Flowers, Here Come Cowboys, All Of This & Nothing, India, and Virginia Plain being incorporated in and out of the set. The Furs experience these days is a different, and many say better one than in decades past. That will most certainly continue to evolve and keep the band fresh. We should expect a more varied setlist as time goes on......although there's always somebody at every show asking for "Pretty In Pink" or "Heartbreak Beat".

What should we expect in terms of touring in the coming year?
Who doesn't love life on a bus??? Seriously, the Furs have been touring more extensively than they had in a long time....as long as audiences continue to respond.....I know the band enjoys playing for them.

WHEN WILL THE FURS PLAY IN THE UK?
Soon. Possibly even this fall. It's been difficult to find time quite frankly.

There are still places in the U.S. that the Furs are trying to cover....but I know that the band will be taking the show across the pond before you know it!! We'll let you know the moment it's a "go".

I also want to say, on behalf of the band, thanks for the continued support and interest!! We're going to continue to create the best live experience for you as is possible, and the new music on the way will absolutely floor you......so hang on to something sturdy!!

These Furs are just getting started.......

Too many to choose. I like "Talk,Talk,Talk" for it is fast and rules. "Mirror Moves" has such a great feel to it for the 80's sound. But I think their great come back album to their original sound is "Book of Days". Real raw sounding. ever song is great!
